how come when you speed up an audio track, the pitch also (usually) goes up?

a cars engine is driven by little explosions. there are different types of engines, american cars often have got bigger rooms for those explosions, so they dont need to do those explosions very often, while italian cars often have got smaller explosionrooms, so those need to nearly double the amount of explosions. i think you know, that the pitch of italien cars is also higher than the pitch of american cars. so if you got a lot of single soundpeaks following each other, the more you have in a second, the higher is the pitch. take formula1 cars, they sound like angry bees.
