You can. Work at it a bit. There’s a strong tendency for them to close but I taught myself to hold mine open after reading that it was impossible.

The question has a false premise. You can sneeze with your eyes open if you concentrate on it. Oddly, sometimes doing this also kills the sneeze just before it happens. Why this is, is possibly because a sneeze involves a chain of events and closing the eyes is one of them, so if you break a link in the chain you may interrupt the sneeze.
