Stock markets are like stores. You can sell Coca Cola simultaneously at a target in California and a 711 in India. Similarly you can sell their stock in multiple places. Indexes like the Dow or NASDAQ are a completely different thing and are simply a compiled list of a predetermined set of stocks.
