There are blood vessels in your skin.

Alcohol applied externally interacts with the blood vessels in your skin, and because they are the exact same kind of blood vessels as those inside your body, the alcohol has the exact same kind of effect on them.

When you apply an alcohol compress to your skin, the alcohol evaporates and takes heat with it. This causes the blood vessels in the area to dilate, which increases blood flow and heat to the area. This can help to relieve pain and inflammation.

Alcohol also has a numbing effect, which can help to reduce pain. This is why alcohol compresses are often used to treat minor injuries, such as cuts and bruises.
