How could one tell the difference between tone being tone deaf and the inability to match pitch? Both from the perspective of the one diagnosed and the one diagnosing.

Say I were tone deaf (I don’t think I actually am lol) how would I be able to tell? And how would someone else be able to tell if I’m tone deaf or if I just can’t match pitch?

If you can listen to notes but can’t tell which is off pitch you’re tone deaf. If you can but your voice can’t match the pitch, then it’s your pitch control. Pitch control can be taught, tone deafness is often a neurological issue.
