Whet you use your hands and feet then the nails will wear down naturally. Having to cut your nails is mainly a modern issue with shoes and gloves or in many cases people not doing physical labor.
However if the nails were to grow long then it was possible to tear off the end of the nails or bite the nails short. We also find a lot of tools such as sharp knives and files which could have been used to keep nails in order among the early humans.
