Humans using wax for fuel dates back into the medieval eras. No sources point out how it happened, but humans have been using fire for thousands of years so it isn’t that surprising.
In the Middle Ages, I recall that they used beeswax (Wax from bee hives) as a luxury item for churches and the rich, I think that somebody just randomly lit up beeswax and discovered that it worked as a better long-lasting fuel than trees. (Major deforestation happened in Europe at that time as population grew)
