No doubt the original discovery and use of glass was the volcanic glass obsidian. Crafted by humans into some of the sharpest blades ever made.

The proper use?!? What do you mean by that? Do you mean fiberoptic cable? Do you mean vacuum tubes? Do you mean thermal insulation? Do you mean telescope lenses? Doorknobs? Retro-reflective paint? Electrical insulators? reinforcement additives for plastic and concrete? Shock sensors? Jewelry, Radiation protection?

What is the “proper use” of glass?

Glass occurs naturally in many places, though not in the exact form we typically associate with glass today. The most well known of these is obsidian, which occurs when lava cools down rapidly. Humans have been using obsidian and other naturally occuring glass, where it was available, for thousands of years, and could even make glass in limited capacity long before they could smelt and refine iron. However this was usually in the form of beads or small chunks or glazing. Glass in the form that we know today was invented by the Romans, who greatly advanced the art of glassmaking/glass blowing. It’s an art that has seen constant development throughout human history and was always considered a prized skill. Of course for most people glass ornaments, jewelry, cups, windows or lenses, were too expensive to obtain for most of human history.

I always assumed glass was “discovered ” by someone observing where lightning struck a patch of sand and caused it to melt/fuse
