a big part of human advancement was the gigantic calorie surplus that came as a result of cooking food and farming. we had enough calories to afford to grow larger, more complex brains. cooking and farming are pretty firmly on-land activities, so it follows that the first (and as of yet only) species to progress to our level of intelligence min-maxing is the one in the right on-land environment with the right amount of tool use.

Some ocean life is incredibly intelligent. Take dolphins and octopuses for example. I think part of it stems from their lack of an ability to craft tools and harness fire.

Life in the ocean is simply not as challenging as life on Earth. For example, we have trees and flat lands, an aspect necessary for developing bipedalism and hands.

It is hard to use intelligence to build a material culture (industry, cooking) if you don’t have hands and cannot build a fire.
After fire all else can be invented.

Where did you assume we humans have “evolved into intelligence”.

There are estimated 7 millions “living things” on the planet. Which of these have looked at humans and have said – wow, you’ve evolved and we’re still the same.

We humans have created these stories – countries, religion, heaven, hell, right, wrong, development, money, food….and now…. intelligence!

Do you think the sun moon planets trees birds flowers snakes animals….give a damn about us?

Mostly fire. You don’t get cooked food (better nutrition) or tools more sophisticated than stone axes without fire. Every major technological improvement in history required fire at some point along the way.

Fire is very hard to come by underwater…

Depends what you class as intelligence, our own intelligence is just our perception of what we think intelligence is.

~84% of the world believe “because god” is the reason. That is the truly horrifying answer.
