Did people actually get rich?
Did individuals just turn in gold from gold panning and were rich or were a select few rich because they found gold in a mine they owned?

CA resident here. They taught us in school that almost no one made a significant amount of money from the actual mining. People who sold things to the miners did quite well. For example, Levi jeans were much tougher than regular pants of the time. Miners rushed to get themselves some Levi’s and consequently, we all know about Levi’s jeans. Dude made bank and the company he founded still exists.
