How did the stories of Ancient Mythological Gods come about? Was it all written by one person, a group of people, etc.?

The way I am picturing it is like a dude at a campfire in a cave writing an imaginary story as the thoughts come to his head, which I know is probably not correct.

We don’t know, as they predate written history, and possibly even oral history. They weren’t all invented by a single person, but rather an application of our inherently superstitious way of thinking across many cultures during many periods of human history.
