How did wooden boats make it across the ocean?

I just watched a video of a big military boat going over HUGE waves. How the hell did we send wooden boats across the ocean without them being completely destroyed?

Back then, people were incredible navigators. As such they know their positioning through using the stars and the sun’s position. From their skills, they were also very well versed in weather forecasting.

From there they know to avoid storms or build ships that were more stable to avoid casualties. Fish would be the primary food source. But overall, they were almost like ocean nomads, where they explored the vast ocean and settling new lands for a short while if they ever encountered it.
