How do airlines choose who to upgrade on their flights?
Will they always upgrade to fill empty seats upfront?

I once got offered a free flight per person roundtrip if we stayed over for 8 hours. We went to an arcade, celebration station in Florida, it was a great day and we got free flights to our next vacation, they didn’t expire. Easily the best part of the vacation, a 2-3 story arcade with a massive amount of games and there were tons of lizards outside we could try and catch. Best vacation ever.
Taking the opposite of an upgrade is equally as good, if not better.
