How do alligators & crocs, too I suppose, swim underwater in sandy, marshy water and not react to sand getting in their eyes?

Guessing this is a biology question. Essentially that question. Lots of animals swim in what is “dirty” water and don’t seem to react to getting sand or debris in their eyes.

Humans? A speck of anything and we’re searching feverishly to get it out.

So what’s the difference? I know some animals have a second eyelid but not all.

ETA: I should have asked more clearly about other animals as well that don’t have multiple eyelids. Do they not have nerve endings in their eyes the way humans do?
