How do ants know what their individual roles are?

I can understand them all walking in a line to and from food sources and their nests…but the specialized roles of “guards” and “warriors” which involve more strategic patterns blows my mind.

Pheromones, which are basically chemicals that ants can use to communicate with one another. Ants don’t understand where they fit in the grand scheme of the colony, they just act based on the pheromones that are being released around them.

Similar to how cells in your body work. Cells in your ear don’t know they are ear cells, but chemicals around them have told them how to behave and they just do it.
