How do they know to stop building and to not have a 10 meter high ant colony?

As people have mention resources stuff. I’m just here to say there was one near my house a meter tall and a meter wide. I’m sure if it was dug up there would be a network of caves spanning 5m-10m diameter. Nature is wild.
