How do bodies of water clean themselves?

Just saw pictures of the Manila Bay after a week of enhanced community quarantine in the country. For years I’ve been seeing it dark and murky. Right now it’s looking like beach waters. How?

The water isnt much less polluted but a lot of the gunk that was making the water murky has sunk to the bottom. Its much clearer at the moment because there is less traffic to churn all the particulates up.

Make some chocolate milk and let it sit for a little while. The chocolate will settle to the bottom. Your milk isn’t any less chocolate, it’s just all settled until you stir it up.

The particles in the water have settled since you don’t have all the traffic stirring them up.
