By extracting teeth if you have no space the wires are tightened to pull them together. If you just have gaps it works the same way to close the gaps. Usually the wires are tightened each visit.

If you push on something long enough with enough force it will move. Think of sumo, whoever ever has the least power loses. Braces move teeth with force so you are forcing bone to move, not an easy thing to do but we have the ability to.

Violence

Extracting teeth to make room then dragging the remaining teeth around to where the orthodontist wants them.

With the metal ones, the basic idea is that they attach a small metal square onto each tooth, with cement. The squares have grooves running through the middle. They place a strong wire through the grooves, and attach the wire with tiny, strong rubber bands. At the monthly appointments, they redo the wire to tighten it.

When you wear the braces for a long time, it forces the teeth to gradually move.

That’s just the basic system, but there are lots of additional contraptions to fix other issues like overbite, narrow palate, and so on.
