How do braces work? Won’t the teeth shift back to its natural position after a period of time?

Bones are not static, they dissolve and reform all the time but very slowly. So applying constant pressure to a tooth for a long time will shift its position in the jawbone, part of the bone will dissolve to make new space for the root of the tooth and the freed space will be filled by newly grown bone.

When there’s no pressure the teeth will stay as they are.

Braces physically pull teeth around. After braces are removed, the teeth will generally move, although not necessarily all the way to their origin. This is countered by nightly use of retainers, which keep the teeth from moving too much.
