How do children in multilingual households differentiate between the two (or more) languages they’re being taught?

When I was a kid I spoke predominantly Language A (moms language, non-native to the place I lived). But as I grew older it switched to the other language. Nowadays I talk to my Mom in B, she responds in A etc. it’s natural literally don’t think about it
