How do countries have conferences in the presence of so many language barriers?

Is there a common language held between all countries? Does everyone have a translator or a screen documenting what is being said? Im mainly speaking in terms of in person conferences I’m very confused.

In the UN, there are 5 official languages. Most diplomats speak one or two of them. It depends on which countries are meeting. Many times there is an obvious choice, like English or Mandarin.

Also, you will notice most of the representatives have headphones, they often listen to official on-the-fly translators

* There are multiple official languages.
* People whose job involves diplomacy often learn several languages (my high school principal spoke 7).
* Some people’s official job is to be a translator and can assist if there isn’t a common language between two people that need to talk.
