How do cruise ships survive heavy storms?

Or in general, how do they go through unexpected earthquakes or anything of the sort, since we rarely hear about cruise ships crashing?

When an earthquake happens out at sea and causes a tsunami for example, large ships will often put out to sea as soon as possible because out at sea the tsunami is quite small. It only gains it’s height and more force as it gets pushed up the shelf nearer to the coast.
