They only need to know where other life forms are relative to themselves, one way they can do this is through sensing pressure changes in the water. No need to use light if there are more effective ways to “see” in a given environment.

Life needs to: not get eaten, eat, and reproduce. Depending on the environment the best way to do those things will always prevail.
