I read recently of smugglers busted with $18 million worth of meth hidden in a vegetable shipment. It was around 16 tons. For the smugglers, Aside from of going to prison, are the smugglers indebted to the cartel or do the cartels see it as a cost of doing business?

Cost of doing business. If they keep their mouth shut about the operation and do the time those thungs generally are forgiven.

My best friend got caught with 150k of weed and as much cash in the early 00s. The guys he worked for weren’t worried about it because they knew he was solid and they paid for his lawyer. The money was never spoken of again.
