How do earbuds turn noise cancelling on and off?

I truly don’t understand the mechanics of this.

It depends on the design of your earbuds.

It’s possible for them to be made so that they block your ear canal very tightly and only electronically allow you to hear certain sounds by piping them from their microphones to their speakers… or, they can be made so that you can normally hear what’s going on around you and they work some black magic to pump some special noise to block background noise out when you want it to.
