There are two types of elevators: traction and hydraulic. A traction elevator is typically found in taller buildings. It has a large electric motor at the top with a control system located in the same room. It pulls the elevator up over a set of large steel wheels that act as a pulley. A counterweight ensures the cables remain taught and stable. Hydraulic elevators are typically deployed in buildings not exceeding four or five floors. The elevator car sits on a large hydraulic piston which is driven upwards with a pump pressuring the hydraulics inside the piston. When the elevator descends the hydraulic fluid is pumped into a large metallic vat that stores the liquid. Traction elevators are fast and hydraulic elevators are slow.
