The “EMR” in EMR pens stands for “electromagnetic resonance”. Electricity and magnetism are actually different aspects of the same fundamental force.

If you pass a current through a conductor it creates a magnetic field around the conductor. If you pass a conductor through a magnetic field (or change the magnetic field around the conductor) it creates a current in the conductor. Using this we can do fancy things like electric motors and radio communication, as well as wireless charging. The charging only really works over very short distances since there would be massive losses otherwise, but for something like a pen that touches a screen directly the distance isn’t a big problem.
