I’m too embarrassed to ask this but here I am.

What does a fashion publication like Vogue for example get out of featuring clothing, designers and high society stories?

I have a basic understanding of advertisements as fuel and subscriptions as supporting revenue. But that’s all I know.

How exactly does a fashion magazine earn and thrive?

There’s nothing unique about fashion magazines that sets their model apart from any other type of magazine. You essentially outlined it yourself – advertising revenue plus the actual cost of the magazine (whether that’s subscribers or buying it off the shelf). Some brands may pay to have their stuff featured in the magazine, but that’s really just an extension of advertising. That’s really all there is to it.

It’s no different to any other magazine that centres on a particular interest, whether that’s video games, music, DIY etc.
