The smoke trail of a missile is more easily visible. So the operators want to scoot fast as fuck so a tank doesn’t just drop an anti personnel type shell on them (there are usually more than one in a group after all, so good chance of one of the them spotting them).

Meanwhile a spotter may be concealed at a different angle from where the javelin team were, just observing. It’s much easier to hide a periscope sticking up behind a rock or berm or a scope sticking through a bush. Especially when the javelin teams direction will attract all the attention.
