How do firefighters/investigators determine the cause of fire or how it started?

They’ll do a fire trail. By and large the most intensely burnt areas will be near the source of the fire and the less burnt furthest away. They will also interview witnesses as to where they saw smoke, flames etc.
This narrows down the location of the fire, they will then study that area for potential sources of ignition for example if if the seat of the fire is in the fuse box for example, that’s a clue also they will ask witnesses if they saw anyone around the building acting strangely ( a person seen entering or leaving with say a can of Petrol/Gas is a bit of a give away.
Essentially it’s detective work. Look at clues from witnesses, and forensic evidence.

They’ll start by looking at a suspects search history and Reddit posts to see for any suspicious, fire planning activity 😅
