How do fish know which depth to stay at? Like does the water pressure hurt them when they pass a certain depth and they ascend in reflex or they assume their depth by the light level and stuff?

As I understand it is usually a temperature thing we’re the fish at different depths need to stay at particular temperatures. (Pressure is also important as some deep sea animals cannot deal with the lower pressure closer to the top) As you get deeper and further away from the sun it gets colder. This is actually a big problem with global warming as it can cause sea creatures to change to the wrong depths which messes with the whole ecosystem.
