How do fish stay in the same place after a flood?

So I live near a creek and there are perch and small bass that live in various pockets of deeper water in the creek. When it rains (and floods) the whole creek is a torrent and flowing out of its banks. Yet, when the creek subsides all the fish are still there in those pockets. Where do they go during a flood? I know they’re not the fish from further up the creek because I have been to the source and there are fish up there too.

Some of them hunker down in eddys in the current, rock cover, tree roots, etc. Small fish can very easily get into little nooks and crannies that are relatively isolated from the strong current. Some fish are also 100% getting moved down stream.
