How do fishing rods not break when pulling heavy fish?

Who says that they don’t? A quick search will turn up many websites with tips on how to repair rods that have lost the argument to a bigger than expected fish or got caught on some immovable object.
A component in a fishing reel called the drag can be adjusted to dispense line rather than having it break under excessive force, it also protects the rod.
I’d like to know this, too, but I’m more curious why the line doesn’t break honestly. I don’t fish but watch river monsters and other shows and what these guys pull out of the water is amazing.
They do sometimes, especially if the angler doesn’t know how to play and land the fish. But essentially, the taper of the rod transfers the increasing load further down the butt of the rod where it has more diameter to handle that stress.
Rods break all the time; when larger fish are caught or the fish pulls in a particular way.
We have lots of strong and bendable materials….like think of Olympic pole vaulters
Same thing with the line; lots of stings can take a pulling tension without breaking “; but if they have too hard a bend they’ll snap
