The glass screen protector is another layer of material on top of the device’s screen.
Any impact has to expend its energy first against the protector, and so it’ll break the protector first.
Think about if you take two graham crackers and stack them. Now drop a chocolate from some height. It might crack one of the crackers, but the bottom one will probably survive.
Basically, a smart phone screen is not made of glass. Neither is the screen protector. Modern materials opens a whole world of possibilities.
These are all composite materials, and our ability to customize them is pretty amazing. The phone screen must be slightly brittle so you can’t bend it by touching it. But a second screen can be more flexible and “cushiony” to absorb impacts. It can also be made to break first.
A good strategy is to cover the phone screen with thick plastic. This serves as a soft cushion that can transfer energy to the screen from your finger.
