Basically, a smart phone screen is not made of glass. Neither is the screen protector. Modern materials opens a whole world of possibilities.

These are all composite materials, and our ability to customize them is pretty amazing. The phone screen must be slightly brittle so you can’t bend it by touching it. But a second screen can be more flexible and “cushiony” to absorb impacts. It can also be made to break first.

A good strategy is to cover the phone screen with thick plastic. This serves as a soft cushion that can transfer energy to the screen from your finger.
