They amplify the sound that come into them, essentially making the noise louder to the ear. Modern ones can be adjusted to amplify the frequencies that the person is having trouble hearing.
My dad got a new hearing aide the other day. He said it was really expensive but it was worth it.
“It’s better than anyone I’ve ever had.”, he said.
