How do laundry dryers work?

When it comes to laundry, washing machines are pretty cut and dry (no pun intended),: Throw clothes in with detergent, let the cycle run, and BOOM! Clean, wet laundry! But how do dryers do what they do? I get introducing heat to help your clothing dry, but how does the lint build up in the lint catcher like it does, and why is there an exhaust port going out into the air, or (in some cases), peoples garages?

A dryer uses heat and a spinning motion to remove water from clothes. Clothes are placed in a large drum that rotates. As the drum turns, hot air is blown through the drum. The hot air removes water from the clothes and the clothes are dried.
