How do laundry dryers work?

When it comes to laundry, washing machines are pretty cut and dry (no pun intended),: Throw clothes in with detergent, let the cycle run, and BOOM! Clean, wet laundry! But how do dryers do what they do? I get introducing heat to help your clothing dry, but how does the lint build up in the lint catcher like it does, and why is there an exhaust port going out into the air, or (in some cases), peoples garages?

In somewhat reverse order,

The washer added a bunch of water to the clothes, heat and moving air help remove the water from the clothes, but the water vapor has to go somewhere. Just adding heat to a closed system would both cause a pressure build up, and also not really dry anything. Just make hot wet clothes. So there needs to be air flow through the dryer to remove the water vapor.

Reason I went in reverse order is because this is a product of needing to vent the clothes. Lint is the small tiny particles that come off clothes. By venting the air they are also in the air and build up by the vent.
