How do long hairs manage to get deeply embedded into things like cushions, pillows and carpets?

I’m not an expert on this, so I might be wrong.
But, the hairs are probably being worked into their positions over time. A hair that gets dropped onto a pillow will move slightly every time that the person rolls over or shifts around. The hairs that are more embedded have probably been there longer than the hairs that are on the surface of the pillow.
