How do mail carriers do their job?

USPS mail carriers have giant bags filled with mail. How do they just reach into their bag and know which mail they’re grabbing? For how much they deliver I feel like they don’t make a lot of mistakes. And then they grab more mail?? It hurts my brain

As a formal letter carrier. At the post office they have the streets as sorting bins (each house has a bin), so after everything is sorted they grab the mail for each home and place it on their bag or the larger bags which go to those weird green mail boxes (these are drop off locations for walking carriers) so when the bag is empty, there is a box close by to get the organized mail to continue the route

Mail carriers work from a truck. Before they start their route down a block or into an apartment, they organize their mail into groups. So each address is in a section. They also have a section of adverts. So the mailperson grabs the mail for you and then grabs the flyers from the advert section and stuffs it in your mail slot. After going down the block. He/she will organize the next section that has to be done at the truck. A lot of this is done before they ever leave the central or sub station.

Before the carrier sets out on their route, the mail is sorted in the order they’ll be going. So, when a carrier grabs mail from their bag or from a tray, they just need to make sure to grab the right number of pieces off the top of the stack or the front of the tray.

They may also have mass mailings where each piece isn’t individually addressed and every mail recipient gets a copy. People sending out mailings know in advance how many recipients are on each route and provide that number of mailpieces. Those don’t need to be included in the sorted mail.

Because **earlier that day, some guy put the mail IN ORDER** before putting it in the bag. The next one off the top of the bag goes to 705 Main Street, and the next one after that goes to 706 Main Street, and the next one goes to 707 Main Street.

All the carrier has to do is reach in, grab the next several off the top, and drop it at the next house.
