How do “medically induced comas” happen?

I recently remembered that I watched the Death Note movie and if I remember correctly, one of the scenes has Light basically try to end himself but he writes in the Death Note that some weirdo doctor saves him and puts him (Light) in a medically induced coma and then ends himself

What is a medically induced coma??

It’s a catch-all term for when doctors knock you out with a powerful sedative. Usually this also means you have to have a breathing tube inserted, as well as other treatments to help support (or even completely takeover) your normal bodily functions. Basically it’s the same idea as getting anesthesia for a surgery, but in this context it’s usually something that’s done for days at a time (if not longer), rather than just for the duration of the procedure.

Fun fact: turns out the way we used to do medically induced comas (keep them deeply unconscious long term) probably killed a lot of people by itself! At a bare minimum, it came with a lot of side effects and long term complications. So now we keep you sedated but only *just* enough to be comfortable, we want you as awake as possible/tolerated. In the media and pop culture, you’ll usually still hear this referred to as a “medically induced coma”
