How do “medically induced comas” happen?

I recently remembered that I watched the Death Note movie and if I remember correctly, one of the scenes has Light basically try to end himself but he writes in the Death Note that some weirdo doctor saves him and puts him (Light) in a medically induced coma and then ends himself

A “medically induced coma” isn’t a specific thing. When people say then, they generally seem to mean when someone is intubated and sedated using medications.
