How do motion sensors work?

For example, I have a motion activated light on my garage. Do they work off of thermal imaging, near-infrared, or some other spectrum? I notice that when it’s colder outside it seems more sensitive to my walking by.

They can be trigerred by thermal motion.
If amotion sensor trigger a light close to tlthe sensor and the sensor is at the ceiling, it might happen that the light doesnt turn of again cause the light emit enough thermal dynamic to keep triggering the sensor.

There are different types but the most common by far are passive infrared or pir. They see temperature and bigger changes / movement triggers them. They are pretty low resolution.
