How do motor cross riders know how fast to hit a ramp/jump to land safely on the downramp?

Like, how do they figure out how to not overshoot or case it? Was just watching a guy hit a heap of jumps in an arena and he got every single landing perfect.

They learn by casing/overshooting a lot of jumps when they’re new at it.

Source: It works the same way in skiing, and I’ve broken a lot of myself in the 30 years I was actively doing it. I don’t start new high impact activities (I’d love to get into whitewater) at my age and condition, because I know how many bails and injuries it takes to learn.
