How do motor cross riders know how fast to hit a ramp/jump to land safely on the downramp?

Like, how do they figure out how to not overshoot or case it? Was just watching a guy hit a heap of jumps in an arena and he got every single landing perfect.

I learned how to ride a bicycle one weekend and a motorcycle the next as a child. Raced motocross all growing up (also probably the first post I’ve had a relevant username for). It comes from a lot of experience and a lot of crashing. At this point I can eyeball a jump and say “should be a wide open 3rd gear here” or “this will be a low 2nd gear seat bounce” it’s not always perfect, might go long or come up short on a brand new jump, take a few laps to really dial in a new track. Can take a few laps to dial in the same track I rode last week, but it has since been re-groomed, and the face of jumps has unintentionally been changed, sometimes rendering last weeks line completely unusable

I remember the first time I truly mastered a rhythm section at the local track as a 10 year old or so. I spent literally the entire day going through just that section of the track. Figured out a few different lines through it and was able to make passes in it based on other people’s lines.

Not much different than how a professional quarterback can throw a ball perfectly through a ring 100 times in a row, or how a baseball pitcher can throw the ball exactly where you tell him to. Just way more practice than most are willing to do. At that level, it becomes an “I’ve failed more times than you’ve even tried” sorta deal
