How do movies ask for “ugly” actors?

Or things seen as “negative” otherwise, like specific disabilities (eg. achondroplasia)

I see a lot of ways it could sound offensive. How do they ask for them to audition? Surely they don’t put it bluntly like “need blonde, ugly man.”

There are casting agents who specialize in “grotesques”. Actors with other than a typical appearance.

The best one had to be from total recall (the original). “We need a woman that Arnold Schwarzenegger can conceivably fit inside of”

I remember seeing an actress in a late night show talking about how the director didn’t want to cast her cause he thought she was too pretty for the role then in the audition he saw her and went “oh okay you’re good”

They don’t. They have Steve Buscemi on speed dial. Unless it’s a Ron Howard flick, in which case Clint Howard is the guy.

I’ll give you 100k if you let me spend five minutes insulting you on a personal level. I’ll be insulting your appearance, every insecurity you have, mocking your race, ethnicity, and anything else that might really hurt your feelings.

Would you take the 100k? Exactly, and so would I. Studios don’t need to be sensitive, they just have to pay enough. Which, for actors, isn’t going to be a lot.

They’ll say “unconventional” or “unique.” For women, if they want someone larger (as-in not “Hollywood” thin) then they’ll say they want “real women.”

I once got an audition for someone “plain”

Unsymmetrical Features is the correct answer. We as humans are naturally attracted to other humans with symmetrical features, traditionally speaking of-course.

Unconventional/unusual etc but you get all sorts really.

Saw one the other day that did stick out though;

‘Shopkeeper: Pakistani (or similar race)’

I was wondering this yesterday as i watched The Office, in one scene Meredith says something like “8n my experience guys are usually more into the back of you than the front”. Like, dude thats gotta hurt the self esteem
