I can answer the second part, about why we act weird around crushes. Simply put, we have an innate fear of rejection! But it goes deeper than that. Back when we lived in small groups where working together was absolutely vital for our survival, being kicked out of the group meant certain death. Even today, we avoid things (for the most part) that would cause our peers to reject us…like stealing, hurting others, etc. Asking out your crush, while not strictly necessary for survival, also taps into that fear of being ejected from the tribe and left to fend for yourself.
