Tiny little pieces of allergens make contact with the eye mucous membrane causing a mild to severe histamine response. Much like how inhaled pollen or dust causes swelling and irritation to the throat and sinuses. It is easier for most airborne allergens to cause a reaction in tender areas such as the eyes, sinuses, mouth, ect, because they immediately come into direct contact with our bodies immune system, which in the case of allergens, it overreacts with a histamine response. That is why we use antihistamines, such as medicated eye drops to directly calm the site of the reaction.
