When people fake their deaths,how do they go about starting their new life without getting caught like they do in the movies and spies?
What is the step by step process they do and is it still possible in modern times?

Ok let me tell you how I did it…
I have dual citizenship so, despite living in my “new” country for 20 years, I retained and kept updated my old country passport and DL.
So when I wanted a new ID, I went back to my old country and legally changed my name by Deed Poll.
Got new Passport and Drivers Licence in new name – in old country – legally, based upon Deed Poll – and returned to new country where no-one knew my new name BUT I still had all my new country IDs – passport, Drivers Licence, bank accounts etc.
Using my new ID I applied to migrate to a third country, was accepted – largely based on my excellent educational qualifications (see below) and moved – voila new person!
Now the other trick is to do some research and change your name to someone about your age that has good academic qualifications.
You can apply to fake diploma mills for a degree that is dated and “appears” to be from a College that really did issue one on that date – just not to you!
Any external Validation with that College then passes scrutiny…
Now for $100 I could easily get a death certificate issued in India or any number of Asian countries for my old name…
But note that I never “faked my death” nor defrauded anyone – other than the fake educational qualifications I used to migrate again – I just wanted to disappear for a fresh start…
To a point, secrets are quite easy to keep if you don’t tell anyone. Secrets will rot your soul, but they *can* be kept.

Basically, decades ago, it used to be easier to fake your own death. It’s a lot harder now and not worth whatever you’re trying to get away from. The most recent episodes say that it’s just a lot easier and better to simply disappear by scrubbing your data off the internet.
You could join the French Foreign Legion. When you join you can opt for a new identity. There are a few disqualifies. If you are honorable discharged you then become a French citizen under your new ID. Learn to speak French fluently before you join or they will beat the language into you. You will also be joining an international brotherhood that would come to your rescue if ever in need.
I’ve guessing the first thing they do is avoid spilling all their secrets on an ELI5 on Reddit.
Well at it’s most simple you go somewhere people don’t know you and introduce yourself by a different name.
Pay for things with cash, work under the table jobs and don’t make any waves or problems. If people ask who you are stick to your made up story and say you don’t have any ID or documents because of a bad family situation. Even if you do get arrested if you haven’t been fingerprinted before it’s going to be very, very hard to connect you with your old identity.
