How do people design the save game feature in large/complex games?

The save game feature seems simple but it’s mind-blowing how it can return the exact state of a game with all elements/events organised in the correct order. Can anyone explain how it works?

It is even more magical. Think of it during play. Screen items are, of course, not physical. Object persistence does not apply. Software fakes it by remembering and restoring every object, calculating movement as needed, many times each second. Game save merely writes all that data to disk.
